As a "wise elder" myself, and one who works with young people, I believe it is vital for those with less life experience to receive with grace the wisdom of those with more. You don't have to agree with your elders, but you do owe them the courtesy of listening. This gives birth to healing dialogue and well-considered action.
It is something I was taught by my own elders, and it has never failed to serve me well.
Bill Mandel is a wise and clear-speaking representative for all that is best in troubled times like these.
We want him back!
Valentine McKay-Riddell
Berkeley, California, USABill Mandel
We used to listen to Bill back in 1960, when we lived in Berkeley. His analysis was vital in helping us, as then young folks, develop a philosophy that would be complex and dynamic enough to prepare us for the many social struggles that have occurred since that time. Having been out of California for many years, we did not realize that Bill was not reinstated when KPFA was "liberated" from corporate control. This information came as a shock. We join others in asking for his reinstatement, so that young people there can have the same great opportunity we had.

Years ago Bill and I served on the editorial board of the Movement newspaper. We often disagreed, and I can think of few disagreements more fruitful, because to confront Bill's point of view you had to think and re-think. Isn't that the point of the sort of commentary KPFA should stand for?

Bill Mandel's analysis is unique and relevant; an elder statesman's perspective re- energizes seniors and bridges to the youth; it will take all generations to win any victories.

Bill Mandel represents a level of depth, knowledge and sophistication in political analysis all too lacking on KPFA's programming. We need him, and we need more discussion of today's world in terms of ideas, understandings, and strategies for change.

For me and my pals at Sac State in the sixties the voice of Mandel provided an arsenal of information and attitude. We brought him to town and his speech rattled the capitol and, lo, it was fun. Let's share him again with everyone. Return that learned and urgent voice to KPFA

Even though I do not live in the San Francisco area, and am not familiar with his broadcasts, I believe that we all need to do what we can to shore up the fragile boundaries of free speech in this country. You don't get to be 87 years old without learning a little something about honesty. And besides, if Pete Seeger signed this, it has got to be right!

What it seems has suffered the most at KPFA in the last few years is the level of intelligence and knowledge on the part of those who are on the air. Lots of emotive stuff, few informed and articulate guests, more off-the-AP-wire news reading, less sheer radio talent and challenging content. One of the things KPFA lost when it lost Mama O'Shea and Bill Mandel was on-air personality combined with a rare and impressive ability to deal with oppositional or critical callers without either temper (try Bensky), inabilty to answer arguments (try Kris Welch), and/or a great deal of defensiveness (try almost anyone who bothers to take calls on KPFA). To hear Mr.Mandell talk with a passionate anti-Communist, or Mama deal with criticism of her behavior was to experience the pleasure of human conversation between disputants who still respect each other. Bring Bill back if just to elevate the level of talk on your station.

Shame, shame, shame. That is the word that fills this petition. It is an insult that a station which claims to uphold free speech should still be shunning one of its greatest voices of all times for violating a gag order - a siren to alarm us of Pacifica's peril. Apprarently, we're still in peril, during times never more dangerous.

Los Angeles, CA, USAThe "all about what's mine" cabal running KPFA is a shameful disgrace - and the reason i no longer give financial support to this phony rip and read disinformation or censored news disservice provider, and their shallow, know nothing programming ideas with their "do nothing" programming making decisions. Bill Mandel should have been returned to the air the day after the station went back on the air in 1999. Shame on you Bensky and the rest of you phony no nothings.
Heidi Chesney
Cotati, California, USANot since the McCarthy era has the media been so much the tool of the right wing... Mandel offers a balancing voice, at the very least, and his place is on KPFA! I listen driving through the Bay Area on a monthly basis, contribute financially even though I live in Butte County, and support our local independent community station. As a vested listener, I demand his reinstatement!

Pasadena, Calif, USAI don't agree with everything Bill has to say but I support his returning to KPFA as a regular public affairs programmer. Its way overdue!
Shiu M. Hung
Menlo Park, CA, USAMr. Mandel's brilliant legacy should not be brushed away, nor should he retire under a cloud. He must be reinstated. Many say it is time for younger voices to be heard-- well and good: they forget however that nature should give them that chance by default. To bolster an injustice today is to insure future injustice which harms us all. For the sake of respect, continuity, and the youth: Reinstate Mr. Mandel at KPFA and keep Free Speech Radio alive!
Robert B. Livingston
San Francisco, California, USAI miss Bill's precise and informative commentaries
Dale Nesbitt
Berkeley, USAAs Condoleesa Rice brings back more and more of the Cold War rhetoric, it is more and more necessary for us to hear and learn from voices like Bill Mandel's. It is now more important than ever that he pass on his wisdom.
Joyce Umamoto
San Francisco, CA, USABill Mandel's return to his popular place on the air would show that KPFA's management recognizes its error in summarily dismissing him. It would help to energize the station's staff and its subscribers by beginning to restore the conviction that KPFA's dedication to justice is more than empty advertising. Bill has spent his life expressing that dedication and deserves nothing less than the apology which reinstatement will convey.

Louisville, Kentucky, USAWe really need people like Bill Mandel at Pacifica. Even though, I would not be able to listen to his show on the air, I can listen on the internet. He is a valuable asset & we should be eager to take advantage of his knowledge.

Brooklyn, New York, USAI never heard Bill Mandel, but recall Madalyn O'Hair's problems with the station. Seeing the response to recalling Mandel is great, but I add my voice without hope for righting this wrong, or for slowing this country's headlongcalling Mandel is great, but I add my voice without hope for righting this wrong, or for slowing this country's headlong pitch into the hell-pit that is at some point always the reward for the mad persuit of total power, rank greed, and hypocrisy - which is the insane mantra of our country's present administration, and too many of its citizens.
M. Neven Du Mont

USABill's commentaries and analysis are above all else very historically based. Whether or not we agree with everything he says, we should all agree that his voice is an important one. Very few of his generation are still with us to share what they lived through and learned. We need to hear his voice, commenting on the past ... and the present.
Steve Bingham
San Rafael, CA, USAI mostly listened to Bill Mandel's Russian news spot in the Morning Show, and it was always riveting. I was fascinated by his commentaries and impressed with his incredible knowledge and eloquence. But he's been away so long now, that those of us who admit to remembering his broadcasts are dating ourselves! It's way past time to bring him back, and when you do bring him back, broadcast him nationally, not just locally. He's a Pacifica treasure!

Houston, TX, USAThese symbolic gestures mean more than ever in these perilous days. But also does the very real necessity to learn from those wise ones who lived the previous decades' worth of experiemce: from them we have the chance to cop a perspective with which to understnad these times. San Francisco, CA, USAI often disagreed with Mr. Mandel, but I always found his shows thoughtful and enlightening. It would be nice to have more programming by figures who predate the baby boom.

Highland Park, New Jersey, USAWhat kind of movement is it that fights to empower listeners and staff over corporatizers and gag rules, returns the Pacifica Foundation to Berkeley, but "forgets" to return Bill Mandel to the airwaves? Houston, Texas, USALove him or hate him, he has so much to give us. Compared to so much on the radio, Bill Mandel is miles ahead.
Steven Gotzler
Jersey City, NJ, USAAs a former President of Pacifica I strongly endorse the return of Bill Mandel to the air: There are three good reasons: 1) what he knows and has to say; 2) as a symbol of the end of the 'bad old days' of pacifica; and 3) As an acknowldgement that our elders have a lot to contribute. Thanks.

Ukiah, CA, USAAlthough I, at times, see things in a different way from Bill, I respect him as a verbal and energetic catalyst for thought and exploration of the possibilities of the democratic process. For one who has so dedicated himself to be a watchdog for open dialogue about the human conditions to be muzzled by "free speech radio" is a cruel irony. He is one of the reasons that free speech radio became a living idea. He needs an call-in open show where his commentary can address any concern he may have

san francisco, California, USATalk about the first being the last! Bill's firing in Spring 95 worked as a sort of trial run, to see if those who pulled off the coup that culminated in the summer of '95 could get away with it.
They did. The rest we know. Upwards of a hundred programmers were purged that August. The voices of whole peoples were stilled, the advances in representation gained in hard struggle and staff strikes reversed. Look at old program guides to see how rich the evening fare used to be, the offerings in areas of labor, feminism, literature. Remember "Freedom Is a Constant Struggle"? "Living on Indian Time"? The Pacific Islander show? Old Mexican, Cuban, doowop music by worldclass musicologists? Staff members spoke out--and were fired. Now issues of democracy at Pacifica have been addressed (and freedom is, indeed, a constant struggle!), the other egregious cases of outright firing (except for Mariah, let us not forget!) have been resolved. It's Bill's turn.
In case you think Bill has nothing to say--read his autobiography! He was involved in every good cause that came down the pike for most of the last century. He has things to say, and he wrote the book on how to do it. He does not buckle under, as members of more than one Congressional committee learned.
There are those who typecast him as, of all things, a one-issue person, an expert on a country that no longer exists. Yet he was fired precisely for on-air comments on another subject (racism) and for violating the gag rule, that is, for leaving his bailiwick. I defy you to find an important issue in which Bill is not interested, and current.
He's "old"? Is that his crime? That he has been around "too long"? A rather indefensible position, wouldn't you say? Contempt for those who have been around the longest and have the most experience is an attitude not worthy of a station that has stood for airing unpopular causes, has supported the oppressed across the board and championed equality for all. Yes, we need youth and new faces. We have some, and more will come. It also behooves us to learn from our elders. Bill is a leftist griot. He has earned

Allentown, PA, USAAfter having listened to KPFA since 1965, I can say, unequivocally that the current fear and confusion behind many recent decisions at KPFA reflects the reasons why Americans do not respect liberals, generally. If you're going to go down, don't turn yourself into a weak and pale reflection of who and what you are. Keep the Golden Voice and inciteful commentary of Bill Mandel at KPFA right where it is.

Santa Rosa, CA, 95401, USAThere is absolutely no justification for keeping Bill Mandel off the air. I was Bill's board operator for a couple of years. During that time I learned more about global politics and the role of the U.S. vis a vis the Soviet Union than I had learned in the previous 50 years of my life. He and I travelled to Ukraine on a "Peace March" in 1988. His knowledge is "all round knowledge" and must be returned to the air. Even the bastions of Capitalism never treated Walter Chronkite as badly as Pacifica has treated Bill. We must return this genuinely progressive voice to the air if Pacifica is to continue as a genuine progressive force in alternative media.

Berkeley, CA, USASpeaking of a few embarrassments, disgrace and ongoing disasters that still need to be rectified in the freePacifica cleansing tide, first there's the failure so far to reinstate and fully acknowledge Bill Mandel and Maria Gulardin of KPFA and the many other Pacifica staff who long ago paid the price for breaking the gag rule and speaking out, while the last to join the struggle, the WBAI fired and banned, are rightly returned and hailed as conquering heros. That's not to knock them, most all of us came to the struggle from some place of denial, ignorance and inaction, just saying the first staff to clearly see the Pacifica coup for what it was and take a principled stand at personal risk - unlike those who stayed dumb, kept their jobs and programs, paid their mortgages - should be at least among the first returned to the air, publicly thanked and honored.

Washington, D.C., USAYour sacking of William Mandel was an atrocity and the bringing of Mc Carthyism to Public Radio. Bill is worth his weight in 10 Ph.Ds and knows more about the Soviet Union than the yoyo Sovietologists hired by the universities and the Establishment. He clearly has a mind of his own and great integrity which hopefully is not abhorrent to Public Radio. Bill is not for sale, is not owned by anyone, and deserves to be heard, especially now. Bringing him back would be a sign that Public Radio is living in its original tradition as an alternative to mainstream broadcasting with something to offer the public sorely in need of information for inquiry and independent judgment, a vital ingredient of democracy.

Fremont, CA, USAAs a young person growing up in a confusing political world of the 1960's, '70's, I wholeheardedly embraced my elders who had prior political experience to break-down and interpret world political events for young minds wanting to grasp and understand what was occuring with international politics, and William Mandel was our teacher, always there to inform us of what was realy going on! Please, reinstate Mr. Mandell to KPFA to continue his political reporting. We still need the voices of our enlightened elders to contribute to these urgent times of economic and political shifts nationally and internationally. I know that many of the leaders at KPFA are of European decent and unfortunately, many of you (unlike Latinos), do not always honor your elders, and their past experiences. I am a Chicana, and I value Mr. Mandell's viewpoint, even though I may not always agree with him politically, I am mature enough to allow for his viewpoints. I wish you would do the same.

Oakland, CA, USAFree speech should not be censored at KPFA. Shame on you! Learn to respect your elders spirit by allowing them to have a voice. Our new world order cannot exclude them.

USAWe need William Mandel on the airwaves more than ever now that this government is rapidly becoming a police state. We mustn't undercut our efforts to re-establish some semblance of democracy simply because of minor differences of opinion or trivial disputes. The slide into totalitarianism that is occuring now is bigger than all of us and demands unprecedented cooperation and unity in order that lovers of the Bill of Rights can prevail. Restore this courageous man to the air immediately!

Chapel Hill, NC, USAIt would benefit the public & KPFA to reinstate Bill Mandel, a much beloved, dedicated, & informative public figure. See following quote: "Philip Maldari, KPFA's public affairs director since 1982 Maldari says Mandel was one of the more popular hosts in KPFA's history for his informed, outspoken and, at the time, controversial views about the Soviet Union. (from Sun. July 26, '98 Robert Selna SPECIAL TO THE SF EXAMINER)"
